340 people gathered in the London Muslim Centre to celebrate with Ebrahim College on its Annual Dinner 2011, which took place on the 2nd December. Dubbed as the ‘Chosen Ones’ as this year’s theme, the aim was to celebrate the achievements of the students studying in the College. Ebrahim College is home to 200 adults and 130 young people studying various subjects, and it has harboured over 2000 students over the last 5 years.
Awards were given out to students, staff, and volunteers to recognise and reward them for their hard work. Ebrahim Academy Student of the Year went to Salman Ahmed; Supplementary School Student of the Year went to Sadia Islam; Volunteer of the Year went to Moynul Islam; Employee of the Year went to Munir Ahmed; and the Special Recognition Award went to 12 year old Iftekhar Sadeque for fundraising £12,000 for the charity this year! Iftekhar says he wishes to ‘thank all the people that donated towards my fundraising activities over the past year and I have learnt so much by volunteering my time for Ebrahim College.’
The evening was full of entertainment and great speeches, which included a live demonstration from Club Submission Jiu-Jitsu, choreographed by Salim Williams and Arman Ali. There was a special appearance from Mayor Lutfur Rahman and other Councillors, whom all witnessed the fantastic work being carried out by the College. Mayor Lutfur Rahman gave a short speech in which he said that ‘institutions like Ebrahim College are pivotal to the future of Tower Hamlets and the academics and knowledge bearers of tomorrow’. The event drew to a close with a banquet style 3 course meal and nasheeds (Islamic songs).
