What are the Islamic Sciences?
Below is a brief introduction to the Islamic Sciences. The Islamic Sciences are the main curriculum content of the Alim course at all its levelsl. The descriptions given below will help students understand which area each subject covers. Details that are specific to each subject at each level of the ISP programme can be found on the 'ISP in detail' page, while details of the Alimiyyah and Takmeel programmes are available on the 'Details of the Alim Course' page.
- Tafsir: Studying the translation of the Holy Qur'an and the relationship of one verse to another with brief commentary. The emphasis here is on the language of the Qur'an more than the commentary of the verses.
- Hadith: Study of sayings and teachings of Muhammad (SAW). Initially just the meaning and basic commentary will be taught with emphasis on memorising the text of the Hadiths
- Aqaid: Study of the Muslim beliefs, differences of opinion in the area and the study of Muslim sects.
- Fiqh: Islamic Jurisprudence or Sacred Law, which details the laws and commandments of Allah I regarding all aspects of human life. At EC we will cater for students of all four schools of thought subject to demand.
- Ulumul Qur'an: Study of the history of the Holy Qur'an, how it was revealed, recorded and preserved, terminology related to it, types of Tafsir, the principles of Tafsir and other details necessary when studying Tafsir.
- Usulul Fiqh: Study of the sources and principles of Islamic Jurisprudence, which are necessary to understand how rulings are derived from the Qur’an and the Hadith.
- Ulumul Hadith: Study of the History of Hadith, how it was preserved and protected; the different classes of Hadith; Hadith experts and narrators; and the terminology of Hadith.
- Arabic Language: Study of the Arabic language targeting all of the skills of comprehension, reading, writing and speaking. Classical and modern standard Arabic are both covered.
- Arabic Grammar: Study of the two branches of Arabic Grammar: Sarf and Nahw. The former deals with the structure and formation of Arabic words and etymology while the latter deals with the structure and formation of Arabic sentences.
- Al-Balaghah: Study of the principles of Arabic eloquence & linguistic beauty found in classical Arabic.
- Al-Qira'ah Al Mujawwadah or Tajweed: Learning to recite the Holy Qur'an correctly.. Every student will practice recitation of the Holy Qur'an with correct pronunciations under a qualified teacher.
- Seerah: Study of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
- Al-Tareekh Al-Islami: the study of Islamic History including the times before the Prophet Muhammad, the times after his demise up to Islam in modern times.
