Rashidun: A Weekend Islamic School for Children

Rashidun is a weekend Islamic school for children aiming to provide an Islamic education to children aged 6 and above. It is a project of Ebrahim al-Khalil Trust and will implement an education system established and run by the Ebrahim al-Khalil Trust team for a decade in north London at a weekend Islamic School now called Safar Academy.

Rashidun means 'the rightly guided ones'. This name has been chosen in the hope of delivering the education necessary for children to live their adult lives as rightly guided people. The school is weekend based not just because of convenience, but based firstly on an underlying philosophy that children will learn better overal and be happier if they are pressured less, and secondly based on our confidence in our system which ensures that children learn in two days what they can learn in 5 if the learning is structured and enjoyable. Thus Rashidun is more than just a traditional maktab (mosque based weekday Qur'an class). We aim to:

  • educate children to learn to recite the Qur'an with tajweed rather than just complete khatams (full recitals);
  • educate them to learn to appreciate the spirit of key Islamic practices such as salah rather than just their physical motions and rules;
  • instil understanding in children rather than just rote learning of recitals and rituals by teaching thier meanings and significance and introducing Arabic as a language;
  • work on character and personality building so that children learn to embody the akhlaq of the Prophet SAW.
  • put them on a path of consistent lifelong learning by taking advantage of the opportunities available at Ebrahim College and other sister projects;
  • support them in their school education by encouraging them to do well and looking for ways to give them extra support and raise overal achievement;
  • make learning enjoyable so that children do not feel burdened and pressured when studying Islam;

Rashidun will be open from 19th April 2008 with some initial students and will continue to enrol children from the age of 6 from then on.

School Hours: Saturdays and Sundays 9am - 12pm.
