In this course, students will receive instruction on the science of Ulūm al-Hadith and be guided through the famous text in this field: Nuzhat al-Nazar Sharh Nukhbat al Fikar by the 9th/15th century hadith master Hafiz Ahmad ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani, an intermediate text on the science of hadith nomenclature, mustalah al-hadith.

Course Description: 

In this course, students will receive instruction on the science of Ulūm al-Hadith and be guided through the famous text in this field: Nuzhat al-Nazar Sharh Nukhbat al Fikar by the 9th/15th century hadith master Hafiz Ahmad ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani, an intermediate text on the science of hadith nomenclature, mustalah al-hadith.

Level: Alimiyyah Programme Year 3

Context:

This module follows on from the AL2 Ulum al-Hadith course. This course serves as a more detailed study of mustalah al-hadith at an intermediate level to understanding technical hadith nomenclature, which students will be encountering frequently not only in relation to their subsequent hadith studies, but also in other sciences such as fiqh, as well as in many books in which hadiths are cited.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

  • Develop understanding of MAL and MSA/MWA
  • Be aware of the origins and stages of development of hadith literature, as well as the key figures and authoritative texts across the centuries;
  • Know the objective of studying mustalah al-hadith;
  • Have explored the classification of hadith and the technical hadith nomenclature reference to hadith authenticity, the narrators, chains of transmission and the text of the hadith;
  • Know some of the distinguishing features of Bukhari and Muslim;
  • Have applied their knowledge of technical hadith nomenclature to selected passages from hadith commentaries;
  • Be aware of the different standards of authenticity held by scholars of hadith and tarikh;
  • Have an understanding of how mustalah al hadith developed by the 9th/5thcentuary and the hadith nomenclature of that era.

Prerequisites:

Students must complete Ulum al-Hadith at Alimiyyah Year 2 level or its equivalent, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Teaching and Learning Strategies:

The classes will be conducted through lectures and discussions.

Course Delivery:

This course will be delivered on campus and streamed live online using an online live streaming platform called ‘Zoom’. Lessons will be recorded and students provided access to them. Further details will be emailed to students 5 days before the course commences insha Allah.
