Course Description:
Students will study Taysir mustalah al-hadith of Mahmud al-Tahhan as their key textbook. The first stage in understanding this key branch of hadith studies is understanding the terminology used by hadith scholars in categorising hadith and the conditions and characteristics of each category.
Level: Alimiyyah Programme Year 2
Context:
The course begins with the history of mustalah and other fundamental concepts, then goes on to talk about the different types of narration (khabar), which will be completed near the end of the second term. Following from that, students will study how narrators are evaluated. This is followed by the manners and modes of transmission. The course finishes with categories of narrators.
Learning Outcomes:
Ensure the students develop familiarity with the key terms and concepts in the field, and become aware of some of the key specialist works.
Prerequisites:
Completion of Alimiyyah Year 1 or equivalent.
Teaching and Learning Strategies:
The classes will be conducted through lectures and discussions.
Course Delivery:
This course will be delivered on campus and streamed live online using an online live streaming platform called ‘Zoom’. Lessons will be recorded and students provided access to them. Further details will be emailed to students 5 days before the course commences insha Allah.
