Tafsir al-Tahlili: Qur’an study (AL1)

Description

Course Description:

Students cover a significant portion of the entire Qur’an – surah Yasin to Nas focusing on language, grammar and structure, and learn to independently translate it into English. Students will also be exposed to causes of revelations.

Level: Alimiyyah Programme Year 1

Context:

This is part of the overall Tafsir curriculum. The Al-Tafsir al-Tahlili component will cover the whole Qur’an over the course of the Alimiyyah Programme.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding

• Some awareness of the basic themes of the Qur’an.
• Knowledge of some asbab al-nuzul (causes of revelation)
• Awareness of basic linguistics.

Skills

Students will be able to:

• Demonstrate an accurate understanding of the basic meaning of a verse with important exegetical commentary;
• Demonstrate a little awareness of any discussions surrounding verses of a juristic, socio-political nature or show cotemporary relevance of verses;
• Demonstrate some knowledge of how Arabic words are used in a Qur’anic context and relate that to its etymology;
• Demonstrate the ability to analyse the text and independently translate it accurately in to English.

Prerequisites:

Students must have studied Ebrahim College’s Arabic Intensive Programme or have studied its equivalent.

Teaching and learning Strategies:

The classes will be conducted through lectures and discussions. This will be led by both the teacher and student. All students are expected to prepare for the lessons by consulting basic commentaries before class.

Course Delivery:

This course will be delivered on campus and streamed live online using an online live streaming platform called ‘Zoom’. Lessons will be recorded and students provided access to them. Further details will be emailed to students 5 days before the course commences insha Allah.
