Having studied the basics of Arabic grammar in English, students will now be taken through an introductory level Arabic grammar text in Arabic, namely Hidayat al-Nahw. While the text is introductory in nature, it thoroughly covers the main discussions related nouns, verbs and particles.

Course Description:

Having studied the basics of Arabic grammar in English, students will now be taken through an introductory level Arabic grammar text in Arabic, namely Hidayat al-Nahw. While the text is introductory in nature, it thoroughly covers the main discussions related nouns, verbs and particles.

Level: Alimiyyah Programme Year 1

Context:

Arabic Grammar is counted among the tool-sciences, required to understand the Qur’an, Hadith, as well as access the rich corpus of scholarly works written in Arabic and studied in the Alimiyyah programme. The text will also serve as an introduction to the style of writing in Arabic in the genre of grammar.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • develop proficiency in grammar themes
  • have a thorough holistic overview of all the key grammatical concepts and be able to recognise, explain, analyse and implement them

Skills

  • be able to analyse intermediate level Arabic texts independently
  • be prepared to move on to an advanced level study of Arabic grammar

be able to decipher texts in Arabic, reading accurately and independently translate Arabic with the aid of a dictionary.

Prerequisites:

Students must have studied Ebrahim College’s Arabic Intensive Programme or have studied its equivalent.

Teaching and learning Strategies:

This module is based around the course textbook: Hidāyah al-Naḥw. Students will be expected to prepare a section of the book before each lesson, which they will read and translate in front of the teacher. The text will be analysed word by word and students will be required to analyse the text grammatically.

The lessons will also include a presentation of key ideas, questions and answers, and student-centred discussion exercises.

Course Delivery:

This course will be delivered on campus and streamed live online using an online live streaming platform called ‘Zoom’. Lessons will be recorded and students provided access to them. Further details will be emailed to students 5 days before the course commences insha Allah.
