Christian-Muslim Studies Network Event

Our very own Dr Ramon Ibrahim Harvey (CIRE), took part and delivered a paper at the Christian-Muslim Studies Network Event at The University of Edinburgh, last weekend, 15-16 July 2018. The two day symposium was themed around ‘Speaking of the One God: Divine Essence, Attributes, and Names in Christian-Muslim Debates’ and featured key note speaker Dr Rowan Williams. The other contributors over the weekend included Prof Mona Siddiqui, Prof Linn Marie Tonstad, Prof Stephen Pickard, Dr Joshua Ralston, and Dr Abdul Rahman Mustafa.

Dr Harvey presented his paper, Towards a Neo-Māturīdī Theology of Divine Nature. The paper discussed Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī’s theological method for using human language to talk about divine attributes, comparing it to other approaches of his time. Dr Harvey made his own proposal of how al-Māturīdī’s ideas can be reread and developed within contemporary debates in theology and philosophy.

The presentation is part of a book on constructive Muslim theology that Dr Harvey is working on to be published by Edinburgh University Press. It is a follow up to The Qur’an and the Just Society, which was released by the same publisher.

Dr Harvey was recently interviewed about his book for a podcast on the New Books Network: http://newbooksnetwork.com/ramon-harvey-the-quran-and-the-just-society-edinburgh-up-2017/
