Advanced Arabic Tafsir (Tafsir al-Tahlili)

Course Description

To have a good grasp and understanding in Arabic language, students study the translation and commentary of selected chapters.

Students will focus on language, grammar and structure, and learn to independently translate it into English. Students will also be exposed to causes of revelations.

Aims of the module

Introduce students to a brief overview of tafsir and its formation. Decipher and engage in lexical and grammatical analysis of selected verses that have complex or advanced structures Introduce students to the basic themes of the chapters being taught this year. Awareness of some understanding surrounding the discussions of abrogated verses. Introduce students to the causes of revelation and historical context. Commentary of verses with a view to understanding the general themes of surah content, the correct meaning and context of verses. Encourage students to engage reflectively with the text and appreciate its unique style. Encourage students to familiarise themselves with the text of Safwah al-Tafasir as the core Qur’anic exegesis for the course.

Duration: 36 weeks (108 hours in total), 3 hours each lesson

Prerequisites: Arabic Intensive or completion of Arabic Language Modular Programme. Students who have not studied at Ebrahim College must display a proficient understanding of Arabic language and grammar.

Progression: Alimiyyah Year 1 Programme

Assessment
Students will be assessed at the end of the course.

Course Delivery

This course will be delivered using an online live streaming platform called ‘Zoom’. Lessons will be recorded and students provided access to them. Further details will be emailed to students 5 days before the course commences insha Allah.
