Course Description

In this course, students will read a wide range of poems from different historical periods, poems from the pre-Islamic Arabia, from Umayyad period, Abbasid era and will also be reading selected poems of those poets who came after them. We will be looking at the anthology of Abu Tammam, selected poems from Diwan al-Shafi’i and 101 selected verses of poetry. The course will help students to develop their skills in analysis and writing.

The course encourages students to:

  • Develop an understanding of the classical poetry.
  • Communicate confidently, clearly and creatively in Arabic through written words, using accurate, complex and classical style of Arabic language.
  • Increase their sensitivity to classical poetry.
  • Create zeal and enthusiasm to understand the Qur’an and Sunnah.
  • Develop positive attitudes to Arabic poetry.

Duration:

24 weeks (over 2 terms), 48 hours in total, 2 hours each lesson

Prerequisites

Students must have studied Ebrahim College’s Arabic Intensive Programme or have studied its equivalent.

Content summary

Students will study and analyse the collection of Abu Tammam from Hamasah and selected poems from Diwan al-Shafi.

Learning outcomes

Students will gain the ability to:

  • Understand and respond, in writing, to written language.
  • Apply the vowel points (Harakah) and demonstrate the usage of words as it is shown in an Arabic dictionary. (Al-Tahqiqaat al-Lughawiyyah).
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of aspects of the text.
  • Demonstrate the ability to bring evidences from Qur’an, Sunnah & Arabic poetry.

Teaching and learning

The classes will be delivered through lectures and discussions which will also include presentations and written exercises.
