About Course

This course will aim to introduce the main interlocutors of the new atheist movement and the challenges they bring forward for Muslims. Particular attention will be given to how atheists instrumentalise science as their main arsenal. Moreover, this course will try to unpack the various ways through which the movement is trying to gain social, cultural, and political prominence.

  • Part 1 – Introduction to New Atheists
  • Part 2 – Science Scientism and Evolution
  • Part 3 – A sociopolitical analysis of New Atheism

Course Delivery
This course is delivered on demand. Students may access the recordings as and when they want. The course was initially streamed live online to an audience

Assessment
Students are not assessed at the end of the course.

Teacher: Dr Shoaib Malik

Assistant Professor at Zayed University, Dubai

Dr Shoaib Malik is formerly trained as a chemical engineer (BEng from the university of Bath and PhD from university of Nottingham) and is an Assistant Professor at Zayed University in Dubai where he teaches the natural sciences. He also had some alimiyyah training in various institutions in the UK. Currently, he studies with Sh. Ali Larakhi from the Meem Institute. He is also doing an MSc in Philosophy od Science and Religion at the University of Edinburgh. His research is on the broad contours of Islam and Science, New Atheism, and Islamic Theology.
